Merchant Maverick is a long-running review site covering payment processors, POS systems, business software and small business lending. It produces detailed processor reviews, complaint summaries, pricing breakdowns and comparison tables, and it is frequently the first result a merchant finds when researching a processor by name. Its reviews are researched and its complaint aggregation is often the only public compilation of merchant grievances against a specific company. It sits in a category with sites like PaymentPop/CardPaymentOptions, POSUSA, PosBull, NerdWallet's business vertical and Swipesum's research content. These sites collectively function as the closest thing merchant services has to a consumer reporting layer — an industry that publishes almost no pricing generates a market for people who compile it. Their value is real and their limitation is structural: nearly all of them are affiliate-monetized, meaning they earn referral revenue when a reader signs up with a reviewed provider. That does not automatically make a review wrong. It does mean the ranking order and the enthusiasm level carry a commercial interest.

You will research your processor online, and you should. But calibrate: use review sites for themes, complaint patterns and the existence of a fee, then verify specific figures against the provider's own published page or a signed document. Merchant Maverick in particular has published sustained critical coverage of companies it could have made money promoting. The right posture is not distrust — it's reading with the funding model in mind and verifying specific numbers against primary sources.

When you read a processor review, scroll to the bottom and look for the affiliate or advertising disclosure. Then take any specific number from the review — a rate, a fee, a contract term — and verify it against the provider's own page or your actual agreement. Use reviews to generate questions, not answers.
