Agentic Commerce
Also called AI agent checkout, ACP, Agentic Commerce Protocol, AP2, Instant Checkout, agent payments
AI assistants buying on a customer's behalf. Real infrastructure in 2026, real revenue for catalog eCommerce, near-zero for a local bar.
What it is
Agentic commerce is transactions initiated and completed by an AI agent on a consumer's behalf. Three stacks are competing. The Agentic Commerce Protocol, built by OpenAI and Stripe and open-sourced under Apache 2.0, has merchants expose agent-facing checkout endpoints; Stripe issues a Shared Payment Token scoped to a specific merchant and cart, so the buyer's credential never leaves the PSP. It launched September 29, 2025 with Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, went live with US Etsy merchants, and covers 1M+ Shopify merchants including Glossier, Vuori, Spanx and SKIMS. Critically, the merchant remains merchant of record — accepting or declining the order, charging the card, calculating and remitting sales tax, and owning fulfillment and returns. Google's AP2, donated to the FIDO Alliance, uses Verifiable Digital Credentials carrying Checkout Mandates and Payment Mandates, supports cards, x402 and Android digital payment credentials, and is at v0.2. Google also shipped Universal Cart at I/O 2026. The networks are past pilot. Visa Intelligent Commerce ships with Agent Score, Agent Directory and a Token Assurance Framework and has OpenAI and Meta partnerships. Mastercard Agent Pay is live globally with 30+ partners, plus Verifiable Intent built with Google and Agent Pay for Machines launched June 2026.
Why it matters to your business
If you run a restaurant, a service business or a retail shop without a real online catalog, agentic commerce is a 2027-and-beyond conversation. Say no to the readiness package and spend the money on something that pays this quarter. If you sell a catalog online, the work is mostly unglamorous: accurate titles, descriptions, SKUs, prices, availability, shipping and return policies, plus clean structured data. That's content, not code, and it improves your ordinary search performance regardless of whether agents ever buy anything. That's the version of this worth doing — it has a payoff even if the prediction is wrong.
Where it gets contested
The honest assessment for a Southwest Florida bar or plumber is near-zero 2026 revenue impact, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling a readiness package. Agentic commerce is card-not-present, catalog-driven eCommerce. It requires a structured machine-readable product feed, a programmatic checkout surface, a PSP supporting delegated tokens, and automated tax, fulfillment and returns — none of which a service business has or needs. On the other side, dismissing it entirely is also wrong. The Ninth Circuit narrowed CFAA reach in a Perplexity agentic-commerce ruling in August 2026, a meaningful legal green light for agent-driven site access. Delaware proposed a new corporate entity type for autonomous agents in July 2026. Visa is spending $2.4 billion on BioCatch to harden behavioral fraud detection against AI-driven attacks. This is not a demo. The area of genuine near-term relevance to local business is discovery, not checkout: AI assistants recommending local businesses raises the value of accurate structured data, correct business listings and clean policy pages. That's content hygiene, and it's sellable honestly. Where readiness services are legitimately worth buying is catalog eCommerce — marine parts, tackle, pool supplies, boutique retail with a real online store — and B2B distributors with SKU catalogs, priced as a fixed-fee audit rather than a retainer.
How to check it yourself
Ask yourself one question: do I have a product catalog with prices and availability that a machine could read? If no, ignore agentic commerce this year. If yes, audit your product feed for accurate titles, descriptions, prices, availability, shipping and return policies — that's the bulk of readiness and it helps your ordinary search visibility today.
