Stripe
Also called Stripe Payments, Stripe Connect, Stripe Terminal, Stripe Billing
The developer-first payments platform that runs a huge share of internet commerce and is building the rails for AI agent checkout.
What it is
Stripe is a payments infrastructure company built for developers. Its core product is card acceptance via API, priced at a published 2.9% + $0.30 for typical online transactions and 2.7% + $0.05 on Stripe Terminal for in-person, with readers at $59 for the M2 and $299 for the S700/S710 plus $10/month for cellular. Stripe Connect, its platform product, charges $2/month per active Express or Custom account plus $0.25 per payout, and lets software companies take an application fee on top of Stripe's rate — which is how most modern SaaS companies monetize payments. Stripe Billing handles subscriptions at 0.7% of billing volume pay-as-you-go, or tiered plans from $620/month at up to $100K in billing volume through $5,750/month at up to $1M with 0.67% overage. Stripe is also the single most important company in agentic commerce. With OpenAI it shipped the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, using Shared Payment Tokens scoped to a specific merchant and cart — live with Etsy merchants and covering 1M+ Shopify merchants. It acquired Bridge for $1.1 billion, co-incubated the Tempo blockchain, and designated Open USD as its default stablecoin for merchants, meaning Stripe can toggle stablecoin acceptance on across an enormous merchant base without those merchants doing anything.
Why it matters to your business
If you sell online, you are probably on Stripe or one hop away from it, and 2.9% + $0.30 is your default. That default is fine at $5,000 a month and expensive at $80,000. Interchange-plus exists at Stripe and elsewhere; you have to ask. More forward-looking: Stripe is the payments layer for AI-agent checkout, and if your business has a real online catalog — marine parts, tackle, pool supplies, boutique retail — the readiness work is mostly structured product data and clean policy pages, not code. That's worth understanding before someone sells you a package for it.
Where it gets contested
Stripe's merchant-facing complaint profile is the standard payment facilitator one: instant onboarding, algorithmic risk management, account freezes and reserve holds, and support that is excellent for developers and thin for a business owner in a crisis. If your funds are held, you are corresponding with a queue. For software companies building on Stripe Connect, the specific documented criticism is risk ambiguity. Rainforest's 2026 comparison of PayFac platforms says Stripe Connect "lacks clarity on who owns risk" and is poor for a residual-ownership strategy, though flexible for developers. That matters enormously if you're a platform: you may be carrying liability you haven't priced. On pricing, 2.9% + $0.30 is a fine developer default and an expensive place to stay. Stripe offers interchange-plus at scale but does not surface it, so most merchants sit on flat rate longer than they should. And the $0.30 fixed fee is punishing at low ticket sizes — the same arithmetic problem Square has. The counterweight is that Stripe's product quality, documentation, uptime and feature velocity are genuinely best-in-class, and no one seriously disputes it. The complaints are about the business model, not the engineering.
How to check it yourself
Log into your Stripe dashboard, pull last month's fees and volume, and compute your effective rate. Then count your transactions and multiply by $0.30. If the fixed-fee component exceeds 20% of your total Stripe cost, your ticket size is small enough that flat-rate pricing is working against you — ask Stripe or an alternative for an interchange-plus quote.
