Square (Block)
Also called Block, Square POS, Square Reader, XYZ, Square Terminal
The most transparent pricing in payments, no contracts, cheap hardware — and a flat rate that stops being cheap around $15-25K a month.
What it is
Square, part of Block, is the company that made payment acceptance self-serve. Its published pricing is the gold standard in the industry: Square Free at $0, Plus at $49/month per location, Premium at $149/month per location; in-person tap/dip/swipe at 2.6% + 15¢ (Free), 2.5% + 15¢ (Plus), 2.4% + 15¢ (Premium); online card at 3.3% + 30¢ (Free) or 2.9% + 30¢ (Plus/Premium); manual entry at 3.5% + 15¢; ACH on invoices at 1%. Hardware is equally public: Register $899, Handheld $399, Terminal $299, Stand $149, Kiosk $149, contactless Reader $59. Contract terms are the most merchant-friendly of any major: no long-term contracts, no early termination fee, 30-day free trials on paid tiers. Scale is substantial — Square reports 450,000+ food and beverage sellers globally, $93 billion+ paid with invoices, and Q2 2026 GPV up 13% globally with US GPV at its fastest pace since Q2 2023 and food and beverage GPV up 20%. Block guided FY2026 gross profit to $12.51 billion, up 21%. Two 2026 developments matter. First, Square raised prices: in-person per-item went from $0.10 to $0.15 and Free-tier online went from 2.9% to 3.3%. Second, and more surprising, Block reported 200+ active ISO partners with 150% seller growth in that channel — a genuine opening in a company that historically gave the agent channel nothing.
Why it matters to your business
Square is the right answer more often than the payments industry likes to admit — for a new business, a low-volume business, a seasonal pop-up, or a second register. No contract means no trap, and $59 for a reader means no capital risk. But the flat rate is a promise to never get cheaper as you grow, and the 2026 per-item increase from $0.10 to $0.15 hits low-ticket businesses hardest. If your average ticket is under $15 and you're doing meaningful volume, run the arithmetic on the fixed fee alone — it's often the larger share of your cost.
Where it gets contested
Square's honest weakness is arithmetic, not ethics. Flat-rate pricing at 2.6% + 15¢ is materially worse than competitively priced interchange-plus for most merchants above roughly $15,000–$25,000 a month, and Square does not tell you where that crossover is. The company that publishes everything does not publish the one number that would cost it customers. The 2026 price increases are the second issue and they were quiet. Moving in-person per-item from $0.10 to $0.15 is a 50% increase on the fixed component — brutal for low-ticket businesses. A coffee shop with a $5 average ticket saw its effective rate jump meaningfully on a change most owners never noticed. Third, support. Square is famously self-serve and asynchronous with no assigned human, and account stability and holds are a documented pain point — the standard consequence of the payment facilitator model's instant onboarding. Fourth, per-device add-on pricing stacks: KDS at $30/month per device on Plus and Kiosk at $50/month per device on Plus add up fast in a multi-terminal restaurant. All of that said, Square's transparency is real and rare, its no-contract stance is genuinely merchant-friendly, and for a business under $15,000 a month it is frequently the correct answer. Saying so is not a weakness.
How to check it yourself
Divide last month's total Square fees by total card volume for your effective rate. Then separately, multiply your transaction count by $0.15 to see how much of your cost is the fixed per-item fee alone. If that fixed component is a large share of your total, low-ticket pricing is your problem, not your percentage rate.
