Shift4 / SkyTab
Also called SkyTab, Shift4 Dine, Shift4 Payments, FOUR, Harbortouch
The restaurant and hospitality specialist. Free hardware, $29.99 per terminal, aggressive growth — and almost no published pricing.
What it is
Shift4 is a Pennsylvania-based payments and commerce company focused on hospitality, restaurants, stadiums and, increasingly, international markets. SkyTab — now marketed as Shift4 Dine — is its restaurant POS and the most direct competitor to Toast in the independent restaurant segment. Shift4 acquired Revel Systems in 2024 for $245 million and is folding it into Shift4 Dine, and completed its acquisition of Global Blue. Growth has been strong. Q2 2026 gross revenue was $1.295 billion, up 34%; gross revenue less network fees was $624 million, up 51%; volume was $61 billion, up 22%, at a 65 basis point blended spread. Shift4 Dine launched in Spain and Australia and Shift4 One is live in 12 countries. SkyTab markets $0 upfront cost, free hardware kits including workstation, reader, printer, drawer and router, plus a lifetime hardware replacement warranty — a genuinely valuable feature in a hurricane market. Reported merchant economics, from third-party review sources rather than Shift4: $29.99 per terminal per month, a negotiable card-present rate in the mid two percents, a 36-month term after a 30-day trial, a $250 per device annual program fee, $189.99–$325 per device "regulatory assurance," and a CPI+1% or 4% annual escalator. Shift4's Advantage Program is its surcharge/dual-pricing product, marketed as offsetting processing fees entirely.
Why it matters to your business
SkyTab is one of the two or three POS systems most likely to be quoted to a Southwest Florida restaurant, and free hardware plus lifetime replacement is a genuinely strong offer in a market that loses equipment to storms. The product is competitive with Toast on features at a much lower software price. But the escalator is the thing to negotiate before signing, not after. A CPI+1% or 4% floor increase, applied annually to a 36-month term with per-device annual fees on top, compounds. Model three years, not one, and ask for the escalator to be capped or removed in writing.
Where it gets contested
SkyTab's pricing page is the sharpest transparency failure in the category. It claims to be "the most affordable POS system without compromising on the features and functionality you need" while publishing no monthly software fee, no hardware price, no processing rate, no contract length and no early termination fee. It renders FAQ headings reading "WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE MONTHLY FEE" and "ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL FEES" whose answers do not appear. Fine print notes advertised pricing is only for new customers. A merchant literally cannot evaluate the offer without a sales call — which is the design. Shift4 also actively blocks automated retrieval of its main marketing domains, returning HTTP 403 on shift4.com and dine.shift4.com. In an era where buyers research through AI assistants, blocking retrieval means being absent from the answer. The reported cost structure deserves scrutiny in a seasonal market: a $250 per device annual program fee plus a CPI+1% or 4% floor escalator means the price rises every year regardless of your revenue, which is punishing for a business doing 70% of its volume November through April. The counterweight is real: free hardware with lifetime replacement genuinely removes the capital objection, the partner program pays an owned and transferable residual, and the product is strong. Just get the escalator and the annual fees disclosed in writing before signing.
How to check it yourself
Before signing, request in writing: the monthly per-terminal fee, the processing rate, the contract term, the early termination fee, the annual per-device program fee, the regulatory assurance fee, and the exact annual escalator language. Then model the total cost in year three, not year one. If any of those seven items can't be produced in writing, that's your answer.
