Clover PracticePay
Patient payments that post themselves into your practice management system.
- Medical & dental
- Professional services
An independent assessment. Vigilant can place Clover PracticePay, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.
What it is
PracticePay is Clover's healthcare build, and it solves the problem every front desk has: the payment gets taken, and then somebody keys it into the practice management system by hand. Text-to-pay and payment links collect the balance remotely or at the desk, and the payment posts back into the PMS automatically — no double entry, no end-of-day reconciliation.
Around that sit the things that actually shorten a patient balance cycle: card-on-file for balance-after-insurance, flexible payment plans for larger treatment, automated text reminders, and a dashboard showing payments, balances and activity in one place. Clover states it connects with the majority of Windows-based practice management systems and syncs with most EHR systems, and the product is HIPAA compliant.
It runs on ordinary Clover hardware — Go, Compact, Flex or Flex Pocket — so the front desk gets a normal card terminal rather than a specialist device, and the practice keeps one vendor for the counter and the receivables.
The offer attached to it deserves reading closely, and we go through it below.
Who it fits
Best for
Dental, medical, optometry, chiropractic and veterinary practices where the front desk is re-keying payments into the PMS, and where balance-after-insurance is ageing past the point it gets paid.
Probably not ideal for
Practices already running a patient-payments platform that posts cleanly, and anyone who cannot commit to a three-year processing agreement — which is what the hardware offer is really buying.
Key capabilities
- Automated payment posting
- Payments sync into the practice management system, removing the manual posting step that eats front-desk time.
- Text-to-pay & payment links
- Collect balances remotely or at the desk, without the patient returning a paper statement.
- PMS and EHR connections
- Connects with the majority of Windows-based practice management systems and syncs with most EHR systems.
- Card-on-file
- Securely stored patient payment details for balance-after-insurance and recurring treatment.
- Payment plans
- Recurring payments and balances spread over time for larger treatment cases.
- Patient communications
- Automated payment reminders and updates by text.
- HIPAA compliance
- Built for handling payment data alongside patient records.
- Standard Clover hardware
- Runs on Go, Compact, Flex or Flex Pocket — an ordinary terminal at the front desk.
Strengths and tradeoffs
Strengths
- The posting automation is the whole point, and it removes the step where front-desk time actually goes.
- Broad PMS coverage — Clover claims the majority of Windows-based practice management systems, which is wider than most patient-payment tools manage.
- Runs on ordinary Clover hardware, so the front desk gets a familiar terminal and the practice keeps one vendor.
- Card-on-file plus payment plans is the right combination for balance-after-insurance and larger treatment cases.
- Backed by Fiserv, so the underwriting and the support bench are not going anywhere.
Tradeoffs
- The hardware promotion requires a three-year merchant processing agreement — the device is cheap because the contract is long.
- Eligibility carries volume floors: $100,000 annual processing for the free Go or 1¢ Compact, $200,000 for Flex or Flex Pocket.
- The 1¢ device is a 36-month rental with early termination fees, not a purchase — leaving early costs money.
- Restricted to businesses that had no First Data merchant account during 2026, so an existing Clover practice will not qualify.
- Clover's own comparison table rates the alternatives as 'very limited' on PMS connections, which is marketing rather than a finding — treat it accordingly.
- Tied to Clover processing, so the rate is not separately negotiable the way it is with a processor-agnostic tool.
Pricing
Processing plus software. The headline offer runs to 31 December 2026: a free Clover Go, or a 36-month rental of Compact, Flex or Flex Pocket at 1¢/month. Qualifying requires a three-year merchant processing agreement, a simplified pricing plan activated within 30 days, and minimum annual processing volume of $100,000 (Go/Compact) or $200,000 (Flex/Flex Pocket). Rentals carry early termination fees, one offer per tax ID, and it is open only to businesses with no First Data merchant account during 2026.
Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.
Hardware
- Clover Go — mobile reader
- Clover Compact — countertop
- Clover Flex / Flex Pocket — handheld

Vigilant's assessment
A genuinely good answer to the re-keying problem, wrapped in an offer that deserves a slow read. A penny a month for a Flex is not the price of the Flex — it is the price of committing three years of your processing. Work out the effective rate across the full term and compare it to what the same practice would pay on interchange-plus with LQpay or Hyfin doing the posting. Sometimes PracticePay still wins. When it does, we will place it; when it doesn't, we will show you the arithmetic.
How it compares
We place all three of these, so this is a comparison rather than a pitch. They solve the same problem — patient balances that age and a front desk that re-keys payments — from three different directions: Clover bundles it with the terminal and the processing, LQpay automates the posting without touching your PMS vendor, and Hyfin is the general AR platform that happens to be very good at this.
| Criterion | Clover PracticePay Bundled with Clover processing | LQpay Purpose-built patient payments | Hyfin General AR automation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | One vendor for the front desk terminal and the posting | Post-insurance collection into any PM system | Getting any invoiced business paid in a day |
| How it posts to your PMS | Direct connection to most Windows-based PM systems | RPA — posts into any EMR/EHR or PM system, real time or daily batch | QuickBooks two-way sync; PM posting is not its job |
| Collection methods | Text-to-pay, payment links, front desk terminal | Batch AR upload, SMS/email statements, WiFi terminal | Invoices, text, email, WhatsApp, QR, payment links |
| Payment plans | Yes — recurring and balances over time | Yes — recurring billing plans | Yes — installments, late fees, early-pay discounts |
| Card on file | Yes, HIPAA compliant | Yes, HIPAA and PCI compliant | Yes, tokenised |
| Dual pricing | No | No | Yes — can move the processing cost off the practice entirely |
| Processing | Clover/Fiserv only — bundled, not separately negotiable | Quoted per practice | Platform fee plus processing, or a dual-pricing programme |
| Contract | Three-year agreement to get the hardware offer | No long-term contract stated | Quotable both ways |
| Watch out for | Volume floors, 36-month rental, early termination fees | Narrower outside healthcare | Not healthcare-specific — no PM posting |
| Pick it when | You want one vendor and the three-year term genuinely suits you | The PM system is the bottleneck and you want to keep your processor options | You want the widest collection toolkit and dual pricing on the table |
Verdict. If the front desk re-keying is the pain and you want to keep your processing negotiable, LQpay. If you want the broadest collection toolkit and the option to take card cost off the P&L entirely, Hyfin. Clover PracticePay wins when you value a single vendor and the three-year commitment is one you were going to make anyway — just price the full term before you sign, not the penny.
