An independent assessment. Vigilant can place MX Merchant & MX POS, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.
What it is
MX Merchant is the piece most merchants do not realise they are entitled to. It is a cloud payments platform — dashboard, reporting, customer records, QuickPay, recurring billing, invoicing, deposits and chargeback visibility — and on the right processing relationship it comes standard rather than as a $20/month gateway line item.
MX POS sits on top of it with vertical builds for restaurants, retail and salons: tickets and tabs, inventory, appointments and staff. It is not a full restaurant platform for a busy dining room, but for a salon, a small retail floor or a counter-service café it removes the need to buy a POS and a gateway separately.
There is also a B2B Interchange Optimizer, which passes Level 2 and Level 3 data automatically. If you invoice other businesses or government, that single feature can move your effective rate more than a rate negotiation will.
Who it fits
Best for
Small retail, salons and counter-service businesses that want a dashboard and a gateway included, and B2B merchants who need Level 2/3 data passed.
Probably not ideal for
Volume table-service restaurants and multi-SKU retail — MX POS is capable, not deep.
Key capabilities
- Dashboard
- Real-time payments view, customer spend history and product performance over time.
- Included gateway
- Comes standard with the merchant account rather than as a separate monthly charge.
- QuickPay
- Card, cash and cheque processed in one transaction flow.
- Reporting
- Deposits, settlement, chargebacks, monthly statements and an access log.
- B2B optimiser
- Automatic Level 2 and Level 3 interchange qualification on business and government cards.
- MX POS
- Vertical POS builds for restaurants, retail and salons on the same platform.
Strengths and tradeoffs
Strengths
- A gateway, a dashboard and a light POS in one account, which removes a whole vendor from the stack.
- Vertical builds for retail, salons and restaurants — tickets, tabs, appointments, inventory and staff.
- Invoicing, recurring billing and a virtual terminal included rather than sold separately.
- Sensible for a business that wants to take a payment anywhere without buying three systems.
- Backed by a substantial acquirer, so underwriting and support are dependable.
Tradeoffs
- It is not a full restaurant platform for a busy dining room, nor a deep retail system.
- Tied to the acquiring relationship, so the rate is negotiated once and then stays put.
- Fewer integrations than the big platforms; unusual workflows need checking first.
- The POS side is competent rather than excellent — it exists so you do not need a separate one.
- Reporting is adequate but not a reason to choose it.
Pricing
Bundled with the merchant account on the right relationship. Ask specifically whether your gateway fee is separate — on many statements it should not be.
Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.
Vigilant's assessment
A good consolidation play: one account for the counter, the invoice and the online payment. If either the counter or the online side is the whole business, a specialist beats it — but for a salon or a small mixed shop, one login and one bill is worth a lot.
How it compares
Consolidation versus specialisation. MX Merchant covers the most ground; the others go deeper in one direction.
| Criterion | NMI Processor-agnostic gateway | Stripe Developer-first, all-in-one | MX Merchant Gateway plus light POS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Independence from any one processor | Online and subscription revenue | Covering counter, invoice and online at once |
| Counter POS | No | Not really | Yes, light but real |
| Appointments | No | No | Yes, in the salon build |
| Recurring billing | Yes | Excellent | Yes |
| Vendors to manage | Gateway plus acquirer | One | One |
| Rate negotiable later | Yes — change processors freely | No | Once, at signing |
| Best size | Any, especially technical or multi-entity | Online-first | Small mixed businesses |
| Pick it when | Lock-in is the thing you fear | You are building online | You want one bill and one login |
Verdict. One small business doing a bit of everything: MX Merchant. Online-first: Stripe. Anyone who wants the freedom to move processors without touching the plumbing: NMI.
