Oracle MICROS Simphony

The enterprise standard, placed by a dealer who only does MICROS.

An independent assessment. Vigilant can place Oracle MICROS Simphony, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.

What it is

MICROS is what large hospitality runs on, and Simphony is its cloud generation. Multi-property, multi-revenue-centre, hotel PMS integration, deep inventory and labour, and an integration marketplace that assumes you already have other enterprise systems to connect to. If you operate a hotel F&B programme, a resort, a club or a group of restaurants with a corporate office, this is the tier you are shopping in.

We place it through Micros Restaurant Systems, a dealer that sells, implements and supports MICROS products and nothing else — 30+ years in food and beverage. That matters more than it sounds. Enterprise POS lives or dies on implementation, and a generalist reseller doing their third MICROS install is a bad way to find that out.

What you get with it: P2PE and EMV payments, gift and loyalty, labour and inventory management, QR order and pay, online ordering, waitlist and reservations, handhelds, kiosks and self-order.

Who it fits

Best for

Hotels and resorts, clubs, multi-revenue-centre operations, and restaurant groups with a corporate office and real reporting requirements.

Probably not ideal for

Single independent restaurants. The licence, the implementation and the ongoing management are all sized for someone larger, and SpotOn will serve you better for less.

Key capabilities

Enterprise scale
Multi-property, multi-revenue-centre, corporate menu and pricing hierarchy.

PCI-compliant P2PE and EMV, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay acceptance.
Operations
Inventory, labour management, gift and loyalty and an integrations marketplace.
Guest channels

Implementation
Placed and supported by a MICROS-only dealer with 30+ years in F&B.

Strengths and tradeoffs

Strengths

  • The enterprise standard for hospitality, with a corporate hierarchy, pricing tiers and reporting built for estates.
  • Property management and hotel system integration that mid-market platforms simply do not have.
  • Extremely configurable — if the operation has a rule, Simphony can usually be made to enforce it.
  • Global support and a deep dealer network, which matters for a group operating across sites.
  • Proven at very high transaction volumes where lighter systems struggle.

Tradeoffs

  • Sized, priced and implemented for organisations much larger than a single independent restaurant.
  • Implementation is a project with a scope document, not an install — plan months, not days.
  • Configurability cuts both ways: it needs somebody who knows the system to keep it right.
  • Ongoing licence and support costs are enterprise-level and rarely fall.
  • If a single-site independent is being pitched MICROS, the honest question is who benefits from that sale.

Pricing

Enterprise licensing plus implementation and managed services. This is a project with a scope document, not a box that arrives.

Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.

Vigilant's assessment

Right for hotels, clubs, casinos and large groups, and wrong for almost everyone else. If you run one restaurant and this is on your shortlist, ask why. SpotOn or Linga will do more of what you need for a fraction of the cost and the timeline.

How it compares

The enterprise question. These are the three we would put in front of a group or a property, and the gap between them is mostly organisational rather than technical.

Verdict. A hotel, club or casino with a corporate reporting requirement: MICROS. A growing group: Linga. A single high-volume room: RPOWER. One independent restaurant being quoted MICROS should call us first.
