An independent assessment. Vigilant can place KORONA POS, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.
What it is
KORONA is the system we reach for when inventory is the actual problem. Liquor stores, vape and CBD shops, bookstores, thrift, pet, hardware, convenience — anywhere with thousands of SKUs, real shrinkage and vendor ordering that has to be right. It handles multi-location and franchise from the same back office, and the reporting is built for someone who reruns the numbers rather than glances at them.
The second half of KORONA is unusual for this industry: no forced payment processing. Most POS vendors make the software cheap and take it back on the rate. KORONA charges for software and lets you bring your own processor. For a merchant with volume, that separation is worth real money and — more importantly — it means you can change processors later without changing your whole store.
There is also a ticketing side that most people miss: amusement parks, museums, water parks and events run on the same platform.
Who it fits
Best for
Multi-SKU retail — liquor, convenience, specialty, franchise groups — and ticketed attractions. Anyone whose last POS could not tell them what actually sold.
Probably not ideal for
Full-service restaurants. KORONA does quick service, cafés and bakeries well; it is not a table-service system.
Key capabilities
- Inventory
- SKU-level control, vendor ordering, stock-taking, loss prevention and product data import.
- Multi-location
- Franchise and chain management from one back office, with per-store and consolidated reporting.
- Ticketing
- Admissions, passes and event management for attractions and museums.
- Self-checkout
- Kiosk lanes on the same inventory and reporting.
- Processor independence
- No mandatory merchant account. This is the feature, not a footnote.
Strengths and tradeoffs
Strengths
- Inventory is the point, not an afterthought — thousands of SKUs, cases and units, automatic reordering by level.
- No forced processing contract. You pick the acquirer, and we can price it independently of the software.
- Unlimited free trial with no card, so you can test it against your real catalogue before committing.
- Genuinely strong for ticketing and admissions — museums, attractions and venues are a real specialty, not a checkbox.
- Franchise and multi-store reporting at a price well below the enterprise retail systems.
- Flat monthly software from around $59, which is legible and doesn't move with your volume.
Tradeoffs
- It is not a restaurant system. Table service, coursing and complex modifiers are not where it belongs.
- The interface is functional rather than beautiful; staff take slightly longer to warm to it.
- Smaller US brand presence than Square or Clover, so it rarely comes up unless somebody points you at it.
- The best features live in the higher tiers, so price the tier you actually need rather than the entry one.
- Hardware is standard rather than distinctive — fine, but nobody will admire the counter.
Pricing
Subscription software, published, no long-term contract and no forced processing agreement. You will pay more for the software than with a rate-subsidised POS, and usually less overall.
Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.
Vigilant's assessment
If your stock is the business — a c-store, a bottle shop, a gift shop with real depth — this is usually the right answer and almost nobody pitches it to you. The absence of a processing lock is the part that matters most: it means the rate stays negotiable for as long as you own the system.
How it compares
Three ways to run a retail counter, all placed by us. The real split is how deep your inventory goes and whether you want the processing tied to the software.
| Criterion | KORONA POS Inventory-first, no processing lock | Lightspeed Retail + restaurant, deep catalog | Clover App ecosystem, sold by everyone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Deep stock control at a fair monthly price | Catalog depth plus a restaurant option | Breadth through apps and hardware choice |
| Inventory depth | Deepest of the three — cases, units, auto-reorder | Very strong, with good purchasing | Adequate; deep needs come from apps |
| Processing | Your choice — no lock-in | Lightspeed Payments strongly steered | Depends on the reseller |
| Software cost | From about $59/month, flat | From about $89/month, tiers add up | Plan tiers, varies by seller |
| Restaurants | No | Yes, a separate strong product | Workable, not specialist |
| Ticketing & admissions | Yes — a genuine specialty | No | Via apps |
| Try before you buy | Unlimited trial, no card | 14-day trial | Depends on the reseller |
| Watch out for | Plain interface; tier gating | Rate pressure and contract length | Leases, plan tiers, who quotes you |
| Pick it when | Stock is the business and you want rate freedom | You need depth and might add a restaurant | You want apps, form factors and room to grow |
Verdict. Stock-heavy single site that wants the processing negotiable: KORONA. Multi-location retail with a restaurant in the group: Lightspeed. Everything else, priced properly: Clover. We place all three.
