SpotOn
Restaurant POS with the support reputation that actually shows up in the reviews.

An independent assessment. Vigilant can place SpotOn, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.
What it is
SpotOn is a full cloud restaurant platform — handhelds, KDS, kiosk, online ordering — but the thing it is genuinely known for is support. It has held the top spot in G2's restaurant POS category through a long run of quarters, and the reason merchants give in those reviews is almost always the same: a human answered.
The product range is broad. SpotOn Restaurant runs full service, SpotOn Terminal covers small retail and service counters, SpotOn Reserve does reservations and waitlist, Teamwork handles scheduling and tip pooling, and online ordering is commission-free rather than a per-order tax. There is also a real enterprise side — stadium and venue concessions — that most small-business POS vendors do not have.
For Southwest Florida the practical advantage is that SpotOn assigns a local rep. When a terminal dies at 7pm on a Friday in season, that matters more than any feature comparison.
Who it fits
Best for
Restaurants and bars that have been burned by a call-centre POS and want a named local contact, plus small retail and service businesses that want one system for payments, appointments and marketing.
Probably not ideal for
Businesses that want deep inventory control or heavy customisation. SpotOn is excellent at hospitality workflow and only adequate at SKU-level retail — Korona or Lightspeed will beat it there.
Key capabilities
- Restaurant
- Table service, coursing, tabs, splits, handhelds, KDS and pay-at-table.
- Commission-free ordering
- Online ordering and delivery management without a per-order cut going to the platform.
- Reserve
- Reservations, waitlist and guest messaging as a first-party module.
- Teamwork
- Scheduling, labour forecasting, tip pooling and payroll hand-off.
- Marketing and loyalty
- Campaigns, review management, loyalty and gift built into the same dashboard.
- Support
- 24/7 plus a local rep. This is the reason most of our SpotOn merchants stay.
Strengths and tradeoffs
Strengths
- Support is the product. Six straight quarters at #1 on G2 for restaurant POS, and the reason merchants give is always the same — a human answered.
- A named local rep for Southwest Florida, which matters more at 7pm on a Friday in season than any feature list.
- Online ordering is commission-free — no per-order cut, which is real money against third-party delivery.
- Reserve, Teamwork and marketing are first-party modules, so you are not stitching three vendors together.
- Entry plans start at $0/month software, so the cost lands in processing rather than a subscription you pay in January.
- A genuine enterprise tier behind it — stadium and venue concessions — so growth does not mean replatforming.
Tradeoffs
- Inventory is adequate, not deep. Multi-SKU retail will outgrow it; KORONA or Lightspeed handle that properly.
- Customisation is limited compared to an on-premise system — you work the way SpotOn works.
- Processing is bundled, so the rate is not separately negotiable once you are on the platform.
- The module list is broad enough that smaller operators pay attention to things they will never switch on.
- Cloud-dependent: a hard internet outage degrades service in a way RPOWER's local server does not.
Pricing
Software is tiered by size with entry plans starting at $0/month; hardware and processing are quoted per site. Same rule as always — get the effective rate, not the headline.
Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.
Hardware
- SpotOn Station — countertop POS
- SpotOn Handheld — pay at table
- SpotOn Terminal — small-format countertop
- Self-order kiosk
- Kitchen display
Specifications
Drawings are schematic — they show the shape and rough proportions of each device, not an exact rendering of one model. SpotOn hardware options and pricing depend on the programme, so ask and we will quote it.
Vigilant's assessment
If your last POS left you on hold, this is the one we lead with. It is not the cheapest and it is not the most configurable, and it wins anyway because somebody picks up the phone. Price the processing with us before you sign — the software being $0 is exactly why the rate deserves a second look.
How it compares
All three are systems we place, aimed at the same dining room from different angles: SpotOn sells service, Linga sells multi-unit control at a lower price, and RPOWER sells not depending on your internet or your processor.
| Criterion | SpotOn Cloud, service-led | Linga POS Cloud, multi-unit | RPOWER On-premise, processor-agnostic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Single and small-group restaurants that want a human on the phone | Franchise and multi-location groups needing above-store control | High-volume bars and clubs that cannot afford an outage |
| Support | 24/7 plus a named local rep — the reason people stay | Smaller bench; more flexible, thinner cover | Direct from the developer and the local dealer |
| If the internet drops | Degrades — cloud dependent | Degrades — cloud dependent | Keeps trading; the database is in your building |
| Processing | Bundled with the platform | Bundled with the platform | Your choice, and changeable later |
| Online ordering | First-party, commission-free | First-party, plus delivery dispatch | Via integration |
| Multi-location | Good; enterprise tier available | Strongest of the three for franchise | Capable, with franchise white-labelling |
| Software cost | From $0/month; cost sits in the rate | Mid-market per terminal | Licence bought outright — higher up front, no rate subsidy |
| Watch out for | Shallow inventory; rate not negotiable after signing | Smaller company; support bench is thinner | Looks its age; real configuration required |
| Pick it when | Service is what you were burned on last time | You run several units and want one menu push | Uptime and processor freedom are worth paying for |
Verdict. One or two locations and a bad support memory: SpotOn. Three or more units with a corporate menu: Linga. A bar doing volume where a dropped connection costs you the night: RPOWER. We place all three, so the answer costs you nothing either way.
