Elavon

Bank-owned acquiring, with true daily funding including weekends.

An independent assessment. Vigilant can place Elavon, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.

What it is

Elavon is U.S. Bank's acquiring arm — one of the older, larger and more conservative processors in the market. The appeal is exactly that conservatism: a bank balance sheet behind the relationship, established underwriting, and hospitality and lodging experience that goes back decades.

The feature we point to most is true daily funding. Most processors fund on banking days, which means Friday, Saturday and Sunday card sales land on Monday or Tuesday. For a restaurant or a hotel doing the majority of its business over a weekend in season, funding seven days a week is a real cash-flow difference — not a rate story, a timing story.

talech, listed separately, is the POS software that runs on this relationship.

Who it fits

Best for

Restaurants, hotels and weekend-heavy businesses where funding timing matters, and merchants who want a bank rather than an ISO on the other end.

Probably not ideal for

Merchants who want to shop the rate aggressively every year. Bank acquirers are stable, not nimble.

Strengths and tradeoffs

Strengths

  • Backed by US Bank, which means stability and underwriting depth that smaller acquirers cannot match.
  • Strong in hospitality and multi-location retail, with the reporting an estate actually needs.
  • Broad hardware and integration support, including major hotel and restaurant systems.
  • Global reach for businesses with locations or customers outside the US.
  • Compliance and security handled to a standard that satisfies larger corporate requirements.

Tradeoffs

  • Big-institution pace — onboarding and change requests move slower than with a nimble acquirer.
  • Pricing is negotiable but rarely volunteered; the first quote is seldom the best one available.
  • Support runs through tiers, which is why having a local advocate matters.
  • The product surface is wide, so scoping matters or you will pay for things you never switch on.
  • Smaller merchants can feel like a low priority in a portfolio this size.

Pricing

Interchange-plus available. Bank pricing is rarely the lowest on paper; price the funding timing into the comparison rather than looking at the rate alone.

Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.

Vigilant's assessment

A safe, credible home for a hotel, a chain or a business that needs bank-grade stability. The rate is winnable but only if somebody pushes for it — which is precisely the work we do, and the reason the first quote should never be the one you sign.

How it compares

For larger or more complex businesses, the acquirer choice is about stability, reach and who will actually answer when something breaks.

Verdict. A hotel or chain that needs institutional stability: Elavon. Selling internationally or in several currencies: Nuvei. A US business wanting breadth without the institutional pace: Payroc.
