Not one we lead with. We can board this if you want it. It is not one we know inside out, so we would be setting it up rather than advising you on it — and we would tell you that before you signed anything. Talk it through with us.

Stripe
The developer default — right for software, usually wrong for a counter.
- Ecommerce
- B2B
- Professional services
- Nonprofit
- Any business
An independent assessment. Vigilant can place Stripe, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.
What it is
Stripe is the best developer experience in payments and it is not close. Payments, Billing for subscriptions, Connect for marketplaces and platforms, Terminal for in-person, Invoicing, Radar for fraud, Tax for compliance, plus Issuing and Treasury. 135+ currencies, 160+ countries, and documentation that is genuinely a product in its own right.
If you are building software, running a marketplace, or selling subscriptions online, Stripe is usually the correct answer and we will say so. The economics work because the alternative is months of integration work.
Where it is the wrong answer is a physical business. Stripe's published rate is flat, it is not the cheapest way to run card-present volume, disputes and account reviews are handled largely without a human, and there is no local rep when your terminal stops at 6pm on a Saturday. Stripe Terminal exists and it is not a POS.
Who it fits
Best for
SaaS, marketplaces, platforms, subscription businesses and anyone whose payment flow is defined in code.
Probably not ideal for
Restaurants, retail counters and service businesses with meaningful card-present volume. The rate is higher than interchange-plus and the support model does not fit a Saturday night.

Strengths and tradeoffs
Strengths
- The best developer experience in payments — documentation, test mode and libraries that genuinely save weeks.
- Billing, invoicing, tax, fraud tooling and reporting all first-party and well built.
- Published pricing you can model without a meeting.
- Marketplace and platform features that few competitors match.
- Fast to launch: a working checkout in an afternoon is realistic.
Tradeoffs
- Stripe is the processor as well as the gateway, so there is no separating the two — the rate is the rate.
- Flat pricing gets expensive at volume, particularly on card-present and B2B card mixes.
- Level II/III support is limited, which costs real money on commercial cards.
- Account reviews and holds are handled largely without a human, and that is painful when funds are frozen.
- Card-present retail is not its strength; a counter business is usually better served elsewhere.
Pricing
Published flat rate. Transparent, and above what a card-present merchant with volume should be paying. That trade is fine online and expensive at a counter.
Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.
Vigilant's assessment
Superb for online and subscription businesses, and frequently the wrong tool for a business that takes cards in person at volume. If most of your card mix is commercial or card-present, the same volume on interchange-plus through a gateway like NMI is usually cheaper — we will show you by how much.
How it compares
Same three, viewed by cost as you scale. This is where online-first and counter-first businesses diverge sharply.
| Criterion | NMI Processor-agnostic gateway | Stripe Developer-first, all-in-one | MX Merchant Gateway plus light POS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Keeping cost negotiable as you grow | Getting online revenue live fast | Mixed counter and online in one place |
| Pricing | Gateway fee plus a rate we negotiate | Published flat rate | Platform fee plus processing |
| Cost at high volume | Usually lowest, on interchange-plus | Highest of the three | Competitive |
| B2B / commercial cards | Level II/III supported | Limited | Supported |
| Card present | Via your chosen hardware | Terminals available, not the focus | Yes, light POS included |
| Developer experience | Good | Best in class | Moderate |
| Support | Through us and the acquirer | Largely self-serve | Through the acquirer |
| Watch out for | Two bills to reconcile | Flat-rate creep and account holds | Less depth than a real POS |
| Pick it when | Volume is real and you want the rate open | You are online-first and moving fast | You want simple and combined |
Verdict. Online-first and early: stay on Stripe, and we will say so. Card-present, B2B, or past roughly $50k a month: the arithmetic usually favours a gateway plus a negotiated rate.
