Not one we lead with. We can board this if you want it. It is not one we know inside out, so we would be setting it up rather than advising you on it — and we would tell you that before you signed anything. Talk it through with us.

NMI
The white-label gateway most other gateways are quietly built on.
- Ecommerce
- B2B
- Professional services
- Retail
- Any business
An independent assessment. Vigilant can place NMI, and is paid the same either way — which is why the drawbacks are on this page too.
What it is
NMI is infrastructure. Twenty years old, $700B+ in annual volume, 1.2M+ active merchants, 235,000+ connected devices, 150+ processor connections and 300+ EMV device certifications. A great many branded gateways you have been sold are NMI underneath with someone else's logo on the login page.
For a merchant the practical value is portability. Because NMI connects to 150+ processors, the gateway is not welded to the acquirer. You can change who processes your cards without rebuilding your checkout, re-tokenising your customer vault or re-certifying your devices. That is the single most expensive thing to fix later and the cheapest thing to get right at the start.
For software companies, NMI Payments and Merchant Central cover embedded acceptance, merchant onboarding, underwriting and residual automation.
Who it fits
Best for
Ecommerce and card-not-present merchants, B2B businesses with recurring billing, and ISVs embedding payments who do not want to be locked to one processor.
Probably not ideal for
A single counter business that just needs a terminal. You would be buying flexibility you will never exercise.
Key capabilities
- Processor independence
- 150+ processor connections — change acquirer without rebuilding checkout or re-tokenising.
- Omnichannel
- Ecommerce, in-person, mobile and unattended acceptance through one integration.
- Tokenisation
- Customer vault and tokenised card-on-file that survives a processor change.
- Recurring billing
- Subscriptions and scheduled payments at platform scale.
- Device certifications
- 300+ certified EMV devices, so the hardware choice stays open.
- Merchant Central
- Payments CRM with underwriting, onboarding and residual automation for ISOs and ISVs.
Strengths and tradeoffs
Strengths
- Processor-agnostic by design — you can change acquirer without rebuilding your payment stack.
- Vaulting and tokenisation that stay with you, so stored cards are not held hostage by one processor.
- Genuinely mature: recurring billing, level II/III data, invoicing, virtual terminal and a full API.
- The standard choice for software companies embedding payments, with a large integration library.
- Because it separates the gateway from the acquiring, we can renegotiate the rate without touching the plumbing.
Tradeoffs
- It is infrastructure, not a business system. No POS, no inventory, no staff management.
- You are buying two things — the gateway and the processing — so the total cost needs adding up properly.
- Implementation assumes technical capability, whether that is your developer or ours.
- Overkill for a single shop that just needs to take cards at a counter.
- Vendor-authored gateway comparisons in this category are marketing; the only real comparison is against your own requirements.
Pricing
Around $20/month plus a per-transaction fee, typically resold through your acquirer. Cheap, and worth checking whether you are already paying for it twice.
Pricing reflects what the vendor publishes or what we have seen quoted. Your actual terms depend on volume, card mix and what is negotiated — which is the part we do.
Vigilant's assessment
The right answer when the payment stack has to outlive the processor. If you are embedding payments in software, running several entities, or simply refuse to be locked in, NMI is the sensible foundation — and the rate stays a separate, winnable negotiation.
How it compares
Three ways to take a payment that is not a card at a counter. The question is how much you want to own and how much you want handed to you.
| Criterion | NMI Processor-agnostic gateway | Stripe Developer-first, all-in-one | MX Merchant Gateway plus light POS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best at | Owning your stack independent of the processor | Shipping fast with excellent tooling | A dashboard, a gateway and a light POS together |
| Processor lock-in | None — that is the point | Total; Stripe is the processor | Tied to the acquiring relationship |
| Who implements it | Your developer, or us | Your developer | Largely configured, not coded |
| Recurring billing | Yes, mature | Yes, excellent | Yes |
| Level II/III data | Yes — matters for B2B rates | Limited | Yes |
| Card vault portability | Yours, portable | Exportable with effort | Tied to the account |
| POS / counter | No | Terminal products available | Yes, light retail and restaurant |
| Cost shape | Gateway fee plus your negotiated rate | Published flat rate | Platform plus processing |
| Pick it when | You want to change processors without a rebuild | You want to launch quickly | You want one vendor for counter and online |
Verdict. Building something that must outlast a processing relationship: NMI. Need it live this month with great docs: Stripe. Want a counter, a dashboard and a gateway from one place: MX Merchant.
